Following is a report by Congregation Leader Br Paul O’Keeffe on recent works performed at Kabongo, Kenya, subsidised by the Delany Foundation. Kabongo is a small village to the east of the town of Eldoret. The Patricians have both a primary and secondary school at Kabongo as well as a Health Centre. The Delany Foundation has already funded there both a chicken and computer programme.
Around the entrance to the Primary School a number of large trees were cut down to beautify that part of the school and to make an area that looks welcoming to parents and children. They also have put in a play area for the smaller children to enjoy before and after school.
The toilets have been refurbished and that is an excellent job and one that was badly needed. The toilets are now clean and can be managed properly with a system that deals with waste and makes it usable in garden areas.
Significant work was also done around the dormitories both boys and girls and pathways have been put in to enable easy getting around in the wet conditions that are in Kenya. Added to this are drains to dispose of extra water so children are not walking in water especially in the period of the ‘long rains’. This is an excellent piece of work and may not look much but I can assure you it was a job that was badly needed.
All in all, very worthwhile work has been accomplished particularly in the area of health and hygiene. The new toilets are excellent and were also badly needed. Earlier in the year at another primary school in Eldoret three children were killed when the school toilets (Long drop only) fell in! This will not happen in Kabongo thanks to the work done.
